Stepwise Refinement Considered Harmful
Abstract
Programming is recognised as one of seven grand challenges in computing education. Decades of research has shown that the major problems novices experience are composition-based ? they do not know what the pieces are and do not know how to put them together. Despite this fact, current textbooks, educational practice, and programming education research hardly address the issue of teaching the skills needed for systematic development of programs.
We provide a conceptual framework for incremental program development, called stepwise improvement, which unifies best practice in modern software development such as test-driven development and refactoring with the prevailing but insufficient perspective of programming methodology, stepwise refinement. The conceptual framework enables well-defined characterizations of incremental program development; in particular, it enables a notion of degree of correctness, which plays a key role in stepwise improvement.
We utilize the conceptual framework to provide a derived programming method, STREAM, designed specifically for novices. The method is a carefully down-scaled version of a full and rich software development process particularly suited for novices learning object-oriented programming. In using it, we hope to achieve two things: to help novice programmers learn faster and better while at the same time laying the foundation for a more thorough treatment of more advanced aspects of software development. |

Title: Computing the Tutte Polynomial in Vertex-Exponential Time
Speaker: Thore Husfeldt, ITU Copenhagen and Lund University
joint work with A. Björklund (Lund), P. Kaski (Helsinki), and M. Koivisto (Helsinki), FOCS 2008
Abstract:
The Tutte polynomial sits in the intersection of enumerative combinatorics, graph theory, and statistical physics. Depending on who looks at it, it counts the colourings of a graph, its number of spanning forests, the reliability of a network, the topology of a knot, and many other things; perhaps most importantly, it computes the partition function of the Ising, Potts, and random cluster model. All in all, tens of thousands of research papers have been written about it in some guise or another.
In the first half of my talk I will spend some time introducing the Tutte polynomial in several ways. For the algorithmic audience this will go via the deletion-contraction algorithm. For the more algebraically inclined I will approach it via the chromatic polynomial from algebraic graph theory. I will also show the connection to statistical mechanics via the Potts model, demonstrating all the theoretical physics I know, which isn't a lot.
Then I will show how the Tutte polynomial for a given graph can be computed in time exponential in the number of vertices. (It's straightforward to do this in time exponential in the number of edges.)

Kort men godt |
| |
Foredragsholder: Sune Liltorp, leder, Potemkin Film

Hack.it. Hacktivism in Italy |
| |
Seminar by Shining (IT)
Moderated by Tatiana Bazzichelli (Aarhus University)
A reconstruction of the history of hacktivism in Italy and of the Italian hacker community from the 1980s to date. In Italy, thanks to the alternative use of Internet, during the past twenty years a vast national network of people who share political, cultural and artistic views has been formed. The Italian hacker community proposes a form of critical information, disseminated through independent and collective projects where the idea of freedom of expression is a central theme.
Shining is member of Freaknet Medialab and Dyne.org. The Freaknet Medialab is an autonomous laboratory of informatics in the deep south of Europe (Catania, Sicily), build entirely with computers recycled from the '70s and hardware donations; established 10 years ago, it runs offering free access to the net, free emails and shell accounts, and various workshops on a voluntary basis. The Dyne.org network is an online free software atelier gathering artisans of different kinds, developing tools for media production and hardware recycling, trying to raise social and political awareness in the way software architectures are built. |

Computing on Solid-State disks: Modeling and Algorithmic challenges
Abstract:
Flash memory based solid-state disks are fast becoming the dominant form of end-user storage technology for mobile devices, partly even replacing the traditional hard disks. The I/O characteristics of the currently available solid-state disks fundamentally differ from those of the hard disks. In this talk, I will present new computation models that can capture the intricacies of the flash devices better. I will then discuss the relationship between the proposed models and the existing memory hierarchy models and show how a large body of merging-based external memory algorithms can be adapted to the flash models.

Virksomhedsbesøg: VIA University Collge |
| |

| |
Forelæsningen afrundes med Q&A. |
