Title: Software Process Improvement: Practice and Research

Fredag d. 4. september kl. 14:15 i Det store auditorium i INCUBA Science Park starter Peter Aksel Nielsen fra Aalborg Universitet efterårets foredragsrække på Datalogisk Institut.

Abstract:

Software process improvement has become a primary focus in systems development research in the later years. The interest among software companies can largely be attributed to the advancement of maturity models like Capability Maturity Model, CMM, that is also being promoted as a requirement for Danish public IT projects. Software process improvement concerns a wide range of models and strategies for improving software companies' productivity, quality, time-to-market, etc. A software company wanting to commit to the CMM faces severe issues with scale and complexity when implementing the model. Will this model be useful in improving time-to-market and quality of software? Should public organisations require their supplier to use the model? Software processes can also be improved by applying other process models, e.g., agile processes. A company wanting to turn to agile development processes faces other issues with learning and evaluating new practices. Should they improve gradually or should they commit to a radical change?

In this seminar I will outline an approach to software process improvement that we have developed through the recent years. It is based on action research that requires close collaboration with software companies and with software developers and managers. Examples of action research will be used to illustrate how the approach to software process improvement can be applied and what the results are.
