This talk will briefly review the concept of general purpose computation on graphics hardware (GPUs). GPUs have developed into powerful parallel processors that can be utilized for scientific computation. This is illustrated by two of our current research projects in the area; open heart surgery simulation and reconstruction of magnetic resonance imaging.

The talk will examine the role of games in the cross-media publishing industry, and describe the conditions for content transfer. Games may contain all the basic elements of other mass media products, such as movies and novels, but are limited by certain structural constraints, which make them very different from their fictional counterparts. The field of cross-media is a very fruitful point of entry to the study of games, and vice versa.

Espen Aarseth is Head of Research at the Center for Computer Games Research, IT University of Copenhagen (http://game.itu.dk) and Professor II, at the Dept of Media and Communication, University of Oslo. He is co-founder and Editor-in-Chief of Game Studies (gamestudies.org) and best-known for his comparative media study of games and literature, Cybertext (1997). 

Like public service broadcasters in other European countries, the BBC is currently grappling with the challenges of transition from analogue to digital technology, and the migration of audiences from TV to other platforms. Although the BBC's funding and Royal Charter have been secured for the medium term, major issues remain to be resolved around staffing, the role of regional broad­casting, and the appropriate response to the explosion of online media. Drawing on material currently being prepared for the 5th edition of his book on News and Journalism in the UK, papers presented at the recent RIPE conference in Amster­dam and elsewhere Brian McNair will address these issues and speculate on the future of the BBC as it approaches analogue switch-off in 2012. Can public service broadcasting survive in Britain, and in what form?
